The Cellular Concept

In 1976, the entire mobile telephone network serving New York City had 12 channels and 545 subscribers. Waiting lists for mobile phone service ran to three years. The government had twice rejected requests for more spectrum, calling mobile phones a luxury not worth the airwaves. So how did we get from there to a world where billions of people carry a phone in their pocket? The answer came from a memo written in December 1947 by a Bell Labs engineer who figured out how to make a finite resource behave like an infinite one. And in a remarkable coincidence, the technology needed to build his idea was invented in the same building, by a different team, in the same month. Why did every long-distance phone call before 1962 sound like it was drowning? And how did one British engineer in Paris, working alone in 1937, solve a problem that the entire telephone industry had accepted as permanent? Alec Reeves conceived Pulse Code Modulation when the technology to build it did not yet exist. His idea was so far ahead of its time that its first real application was classified: a secret wartime system used for encrypted voice calls between Roosevelt and Churchill. It took twenty-five years, a world war, and the invention of the transistor before PCM reached the public. When it did, a single copper wire went from carrying one phone call to carrying twenty-four. Why does your phone still use a technology invented in 1963? The answer is hiding in plain sight every time an automated system asks you to press one for English. Eight audio frequencies, arranged in pairs, built the entire system that turned the telephone into a machine that could talk to computers. Bell Labs designed them. A psychologist named John Karlin designed the keypad layout that became the global standard for ATMs, door panels, and every phone ever made. And two extra keys, added in 1968 because the engineers believed phones and computers would one day need to speak, became the foundation of telephone banking, voicemail, and automated call routing.
